How To Look In Florence

Ever careful about public appearance, I considered looking like a local when out on the street, perhaps walking to work or strolling to meet a friend for a cappuccino. I found that it is more fun to use quizzical expressions, page through a guide book, unfold a map, stare at buildings, and snap pictures, so I am happy looking like a tourist. People are more tolerant when you suddenly stop walking in front of them, too.

My best friend (so far) in Florence is an inexpensive hand-held compass. Maps are important, but if I didn't know in which direction to hold the map when looking at it, I would often walk the wrong way. I also look for street names very dependably carved into the sides of buildings.

Did you use that compass to find you some lemon gelato yet?

Nooohhhhhh... not that! The dreaded GINORMOUS compass. Dear reader, look again at that photograph and for context, note the size of the hand holding this indelicate gadget. Scott is downplaying the enormity of this object -- but we know better. Oh yes, yes we DO.

Hey Scott! You will love Firenze! But try not to get too lost-in spite of your compass! Doug and I were there a few years ago- we had to drop off a rental car in Florence after we drove in. The car rental place was 3 blocks from our hotel. After driving around 45 minutes, going down "pedestrian only" streets, getting hopelessly lost, we finally stopped for directions. I (of course!) had to ask, in Italian, no less. I switched to French in the middle having difficulty understanding. Another 1/2 hour later we ended up following a taxi driver who very nicely pointed the way. Then we WALKED to the hotel- a FIVE minute walk! A lesson learned:NEVER drive in Florence!!! Have fun and eat panini after you figure out all the different kinds of ham. And you thought there was only one kind of prosciutto, didn't you??? Love, Margo :)
